Contracting

Last · 4 min 50 s apart · 62 s long

The Live Activity on your Lock Screen. Go on, tap it, and watch the tide below.

Contractions come at 3 a.m., in the dark, with one hand held. Nobody should be unlocking a phone or doing sums between them. BirthTandem does the counting, so the two of you can just be there.

Two hands holding on a rumpled bed at night. A lamp glows on the bedside table, next to a phone.

01No unlocking

Your phone stays locked. The timer still works.

In the middle of a contraction, nobody wants to type a passcode. Tap Start and Stop wherever your phone already is. Every one of these writes to the same timer.

  1. 1Lock Screen

    Start and stop without unlocking.

A big Stop button, the time so far, and your last interval and length. No passcode, no app to find.

An iPhone Lock Screen with BirthTandem's Live Activity: Contracting, 2:03, last 4 min 50 s apart and 62 s long, the 5-1-1 marks, and a Stop contraction button
  2. 2Dynamic Island

    The count stays up top.

Reply to a message or look something up: the clock keeps running in the Dynamic Island. Press and hold it for the Stop button.

  3. 3Control Center, Action Button, Siri

    Or don't look at all.

Add the Contraction toggle to Control Center, on iOS 18 and later. Set the Action Button to Time a contraction: press and hold to start, and again to stop. Or say Start contraction in BirthTandem.

  4. 4The app

    One big button.

BirthTandem opens straight onto it, with nothing in the way. Under it, the Tideline draws the last two hours, so the pattern shows at a glance.

BirthTandem's Timer: Contracting, 0:46, a large Stop button, the rule card reading Getting closer with 5 and 1 lit, and the Tideline of the last two hours
  5. 5Mistakes happen

A wrong tap takes one tap to fix.

Every tap gets five seconds of Undo. Change a start or end time, delete one, or add one you forgot to time. All of it free, and never behind a paywall.

The Edit contraction sheet over the list of contractions: started 10:19, ended 10:20, lasted 62 s, with Delete and Save

02Your provider's rule

Know when it's time to call.

Enter the rule your provider gave you: 5-1-1, 4-1-1, 3-1-1 or your own numbers. Each number lights up while it holds. When all three do, you get one gentle alert.

Rule met

BirthTandem won't tell you what to do. It tells you when the rule your provider gave you is met, so you can call them.

Recorded in the app

The same night, in the real app.

One Start, and a Stop a minute later. The alert arrives, and a tap on it opens the summary you'd read out on the phone.

A 15-second video with no sound. On the timer screen, Start is tapped, and a minute later, Stop. An alert says the 5-1-1 rule is met. Tapping it opens the Summary: 12 contractions, about 4 min 50 s apart, lasting about 65 s, met at 3:12 AM.

03Ready for the phone call

The last hour, in words you can read out.

When you call, they'll ask how far apart and how long. The summary has the answer, ready to read aloud or paste into a message.
